Performance Opportunities

We provide our students with a broad range of opportunities to perform, both at NMS and in the community.

Recitals
Our recital spaces are hopping with the variety of recital offerings scheduled throughout the year, including:

  • Studio Recitals
  • Department Recitals
  • Schoolwide Recitals
  • Adult Schoolwide Recitals

In addition to teachers' studio recitals, students can sign up for numerous other recitals throughout the year. Whether the recital is instrument-specific, as in the department recitals, or open to all instrumentalists and singers schoolwide, there is always a recital coming up right around the corner. Please visit our Events page to find upcoming recital dates.

Honors Recitals
The NMS Honors Recitals are auditioned recitals for exceptional performers between the ages of 11-18, performing with the highest quality of artistry and at an advanced level for their age. All students who audition receive constructive comments from the judges, focusing the auditions on positive educational growth rather than on winning or not winning.

Young Junior Honors Recital
This non-auditioned recital is by teacher recommendation and is intended for our younger students who are performing at a high level, but who do not yet meet the age requirements for the Honors Recitals.

Young Artist Diploma Recitals
Students looking for the complete pre-college preparatory experience join our Young Artist Diploma Program (YAD), a progressive program of study that encompasses solo and collaborative playing, performance techniques, and musical understanding. There are two YAD recitals each year.

Awards Ceremony
Select students are invited to perform at our year-end Awards Ceremony in June, where merit-based awards are presented.

Greater New Haven Youth Ensembles Concerts
Our Greater New Haven Youth Ensembles perform two concerts at Yale University's Battell Chapel each year. The ensembles offer young musicians unparalleled opportunities to play with other high-achieving students.

Dance Concert
At the end of the academic year, our dance students present a three-part Dance Concert. All choreography is developed by the dancers in conjunction with their teachers as part of our Collaborative Choreography Initiative.

Musical Theater Workshop
In the spring, our Musical Theater Workshop classes present a fully staged musical.

ATLAS Performances
Our ATLAS students present two fully staged performances each year at the end of each semester.

Community Performances
Our students, particularly those in our Premier Ensembles, frequently perform in the community, including performances at local libraries, schools, festivals, and events.
