The Word is a transformative literary arts program for New Haven young people. The Word partners experienced teaching poets, award-winning spoken-word artists, and emcees with creative students, teachers, and administrators across the city to equip youth to become stronger poets and culture creators.
Create original spoken word poetry and/or music to break cages built around our hearts and around people. This workshop explores the musical, expressive, and world-changing power of young artists' written and spoken words, especially when combined with music. Led by nationally acclaimed poet Tarishi Shuler, winner at multiple National Poetry Slams. Partnered with a series of amazing guest poets and rappers, young folx will create their own poems, raps, and songs aimed at personal and societal liberation, then combine their words with their own and their classmates' musical skills and instruments.
