Letter from the Executive Director: What's in a Neighborhood?

Dear NMS Community,

Over the winter break, I spent time reading through They Who Speak in Music, a remarkable book from 1956 chronicling the first 45 years of NMS. Understanding our rich history not only grounds me in our mission, but also inspires me with new ways to serve our community.

What struck me most about the early years of NMS, was the unwavering dedication of our founders to use music education as a means to uplift and support local immigrants. Throughout the book, in addition to the wonderful musings on music, there are ample conversations about a commitment to creating a safe and welcoming space for all—a true Neighborhood in every sense of the word.

At a time when the world feels increasingly divided and unwelcoming towards so many, this vision of inclusivity is more relevant than ever. NMS remains steadfast in its belief that everyone has a home here. This commitment, rooted in our founding values, continues to guide us today.

Our core value of building and supporting a Diverse Community is our North Star, and we will continue to embrace and support all of the unique identities and experiences of our community. Our core value of Equity guides our work to create opportunities for everyone to thrive.

Like any good neighborhood, we care for, support, and look out for one another.

We will always maintain our commitment to be Neighborhood Music School.

Sincerely,
