Deborah (Debby) Fischer Teason has been a musician since she joined her church choir at the age of five. She has a degree in Theory and Composition from Arizona State University, and during the course of her career as a composer was commissioned by Opera Omaha, the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Greater Bridgeport Symphony, the American Composers Forum, the Waterbury Symphony, the New Haven Chorale, and many chamber ensembles and soloists. In 1999 she started the Neighborhood Music School steel band program, and during the next 25 years founded steel bands and steel band programs at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the Yale Afro-American Cultural Center, the Foote School, Choate-Rosemary Hall and Highville Charter School. Although offically retired, Ms. Teason continues to direct and arrange for Sacred Steel, the liturgical steel band at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, and to serve as Program Coordinator for the St. Luke’s Steel Band Strings and Steel Summer Camp in collaboration with Music Haven and Possible Futures.
