This Halloween, Neighborhood Music School presents Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror live scored with electronic music, percussion, and spoken word, performed in sync with the 1922 silent vampire film. Scoring and instrumentation performed by NMS teaching artist Istvan Peter B'Racz (synthesizer and piano), Thom Kozumplik (percussion), and Tom Burnett (spoken word and synthesizer), formerly of the band Sub-Verse. 

Costumes are encouraged—vampires get in free! Enjoy spooky cocktails and snacks while you watch.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Two screenings are offered: 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Recommended for ages 12 & up.

In 1994, electronic music & pianist Istvan Peter B'Racz with fellow members of electro-acoustic band Goo-Rilla, live scored the film Nosferatu at Neighborhood Music School. In subsequent years, B’Racz and collaborators presented the film and live music at various venues across the region. The performance became a local tradition, running for almost two decades. This fall, B’Racz brings back the performance to NMS for the first time since 2014. 

Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is a 1922 German Expressionist silent film directed by F.W. Murnau. One of the original vampire movies and a loose interpretation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu follows the story of a young real-estate agent and his wife who travel to Transylvania, encounter a vampire on a killing spree – the terrible Nosferatu– and then plot to vanquish the vampire.

The film was lost through a copyright dispute led by Bram Stoker’s widow, Florence. Over the years, enthusiasts and musicians have sought to recover the film and the score or created their own. This performance joins a long tradition of keeping Murnau’s classic alive.
