David is a lifelong musician, having studied piano from ages 5 to 14, and played clarinet, saxophone, and trombone from middle school through high school, and sang in various high school groups. David met his wife, Laura, while singing in a choir in Cincinnati, and they have been singing together in New Haven since 1991 when they moved to Yale for Laura’s medical residency. Their children, Richard and Caroline, studied piano at NMS. Caroline also studied violin with Carl Shugart from age 5 through high school.
David believes the education and training offered by Neighborhood Music School is so important to the New Haven community. He views the performing arts as critical for people of all ages to engage with others as they expand their bodies and their minds.
David retired after a 40-year career in corporate and higher education finance. Professionally, he held budget and finance roles in the banking and insurance industries, spent nearly 15 years at Yale, and over 14 years at Columbia University.
