Stephen Dest (Founder of the NMS Theater Dept.) is an award-winning writer and director. He is also a retired professional actor, with over 25
years of professional experience (including Broadway, Regional and National Tours). Roles of note include: Rodger (RENT), Tybalt (R&J),
Houdini (HOUDINI) and Johnny (THE OUTSIDERS) He has written for both film and stage. Some of his award-winning films include: The 2008
short film, BLIND (Cannes Film Festival - Movieola), 2013 feature film MY BROTHER JACK (Indie Rights Movies/Nelson Madison Films) and
the acclaimed 2018 documentary I AM SHAKESPEARE (The Henry Green Story), considered one of the most important documentaries of the
year. He is a Professor of Film and Theatre at the University of Connecticut. Stephen is the recipient of the 2012 Arts Council Award.
