Board Representative to Program Leadership Team
I’ve been editor-in-chief of the Yale Alumni Magazine since 2003. We do our best to bring in great writers, and we’ve published, for instance, Tom Wolfe, David Leonhardt, Tom Perrotta, Emily Bazelon, and some Pulitzer winners—along with many great writers whose names aren’t as well known (yet). Articles we’ve published have been covered in the Wall Street Journal and New York Times. Previously, I was editor-in-chief of the environmental quarterly OnEarth, published by the Natural Resources Defense Council. I serve on the board of the Association of American Rhodes Scholars and edit its quarterly journal. I’ve written for Ms. magazine, the New York Daily News, and other publications. I was born in New Haven, grew up in Iowa, and have lived in New York City, New Jersey, Finland, and Hamden. My two sons grew up mostly in Hamden—and at NMS. They took lessons in flute, violin, piano, and music theory and have played in multiple ensembles. For my part, I play the violin, and I’m pretty sure that NMS ensembles have added several years to my life. BA in English, Yale, magna cum laude BA in History, Oxford, Rhodes Scholarship MA in History, Columbia
