Art Hovey holds BA and MAT degrees in physics and mathematics from Yale University. During his college years he frequently performed in degree recitals for the Yale School of Music, as there were no tuba majors at that time. He was the principal tuba player with the New Haven Symphony Orchestra from 1964 to 1974, and is currently active with the Galvanized Jazz Band, Civic Orchestra of New Haven and the Connecticut Symphonic Winds. He has directed and arranged for numerous groups, including the Amity Ragtime Ensemble, Squabble Hill Intercollegiate Backyard Band, New Black Raspberry Jazz Band, Sugarfoot Jazz Band, NMS Ragtime Stompers, the NMS Rhythm Kings, and the NMS Faculty Ragtime Ensemble. He also has extensive experience coaching summer youth jazz bands for the Great Connecticut Jazz Festival and NMS.
I also taught physics at Amity Regional High School for 35 years. I now teach at the NMS because I still enjoy working with students of all ages and often learning from them. I also enjoy arranging music because it's the most rewarding form of problem-solving that I know of.
