Online Music Classes
After careful consideration, we have decided that we will begin fall instruction online.
We will evaluate the situation monthly and send updates regularly throughout the fall.
We look forward to sharing our building reopening plans when it is determined that we may safely reopen.
Cabaret is a medium that combines the performers’ musicality and interpretive imagination in an intimate performance setting. Students in this class will explore different approaches to understanding what motivates a song, and work towards a public performance at the end of each term. Students will choose material in consultation with the instructor. An informal interview is required. Teens welcome with permission of instructor. Maximum of six students per class.
Family Dance Class
This is an interactive class of movement, basic dance fundamentals, and play for the entire family. Includes the basic foundation of pre-ballet/ballet for ages 3-6 yrs, while the entire class is applicable and enjoyable for the entire family.
Class will be a hybrid of pre-ballet technique and center floor warm up; the other half of the class will be creative and improvisational through storytelling, props, ideas, pictures, etc.
Meet the Piano
A fun-filled first exploration of the keyboard in a small-group setting. Students will experience important beginning musical concepts, keyboard orientation and beginnings of pitch and rhythmic notation through song and movement activities. They will master simple melodies on the piano and build a solid foundation for future music study. Student must have (electric) piano or keyboard with at least four octaves for home practice.
Music in Motion I and II
Action packed! Children march, bounce, jump, run and shake using props such as scarves, hoops and ribbons. As children continue to grow, this class broadens their musical understanding of pitch, phrasing, tempo and dynamics. This class serves as both a pre-instrumental and pre-dance experience.
Music in Motion III
Preschoolers are exposed to a world of dramatic and imaginative play, using their natural creativity to explore the world of music. Pitch, rhythm and beat-keeping are further expanded through stories, singing and instrument play. Skipping, leaping, galloping and group circle dances expand their movement repertoire. In this class we take advantage of the great learning environment of NMS and visit other teaching studios where students are introduced to a range of instruments by skilled teachers.
Music Theory and Tap/Percussive Dance Improv
This class is for the tap dancer looking to expand their knowledge of jazz music and improvisation, the musician looking to work with their body and feet as an instrument, and any dancer or dance teacher looking to deepen their creativity and understanding of music theory. We will discuss and review the basics of music theory and lay out a foundation of basic tap vocabulary in order to focus on building phrases and improvising. We will use jazz music as a portal towards understanding musical phrasing and our confidence in creating percussive phrases in improvisation and choreography. Come with an open mind and be prepared to have fun, sing, play games, and tap into your deepest musically creative self!
Music Theory AP Prep
For students with advanced knowledge. Review and practice taking the Advanced Placement Music Theory exam.
Music Theory I
Understand the language of music. Everyone will benefit from these fun interactive music theory classes. Take your musicianship to the next level by improving your understanding of how music works, developing your ability to hear music and improving your music literacy. For all instrumentalists and vocalists.
Music Theory II
For those with a rudimentary understanding and some playing experience. Class continues improving fundamentals, plus minor scales and key signatures, intervals, triads and inversions. Some form and harmonic analysis included and continued development of aural skills.
Music Theory III
This class is a continuation of Music Theory II focusing on chordal analysis. There will also be a listening and history component. Not open to beginners.
Musical Theater Audition Workshop
“Gosh, I hope I Get It!” Brush up on your audition techniques with this four-week mini workshop! Musical Theatre Audition Workshop will prepare students to audition for the Musical Theater genre, by incorporating acting, vocal, and movement disciplines. The workshop will prepare students for upcoming auditions, build confidence, strengthen audition skills, review audition room etiquette and help to reduce audition anxiety in a fun, creative, and supportive environment. Students will learn a 16-measure audition piece, practice short dance presentations and cold readings, and participate in a short “Mock” audition! Join the fun and land the role of your dreams! Musical Theater Workshop
In this weekly program, students develop the skills needed to thrive in any musical theater setting. Classes focus on vocal coaching, improvisation, comedy, monologues and multiple dance genres - helping prepare students to share their work in a mid year (Sept-Dec course), end of the year (Feb-June course) performance.
Age 8-12 A perfect introduction to the world of musical theater studies. Dance, voice, and drama basics are incorporated in this fun and exploratory class. Students will gain valuable singing techniques, explore dance and drama activities that build a strong foundation of skills and confidence.
Age 13-18 In this course, students work to integrate voice, dance & drama - building the skills for confident, dynamic performances and preparing students for outside auditions. Students will learn healthy vocal technique and build skills through dance combinations and theatrical exercises). Students polish their skills in a focused and supportive approach that propels their unique style and expressive freedom.
Piano – Beginnings
Learn the basics of playing the piano in a friendly environment with fellow beginners. Small class sizes allow for a high level of personal attention. Classes fill up fast, so register early. Great for building a foundation for future music study on any instrument.
Yoga Musical Adventures
Yoga Musical Adventures will help your child be active, relieve stress and stay positive! Children will learn basic yoga positions and relaxations through simple and fun stories intertwined with songs. Have your child dress comfortably in order to get down on a mat and exercise.
